What exactly is the difference between documentary and lifestyle photography?
Lifestyle sessions include a combination of candid and posed shots. During a lifestyle session, the photographer may place you in a certain spot, or give you a small amount of direction, and then let you and your family interact from there. Documentary sessions are a lot less structured, with a more photojournalistic approach. You will be photographed with no interference, capturing very candid and genuine moments as they happen. Documentary sessions also focus more on telling a story. Whichever you choose, it’s about documenting your lives, the interaction of your family, and the details you’ll always want to remember.
How can we help make our photos look natural?
Relax and have fun! If you’re enjoying yourself, it will come through in the photos. Just be yourselves, and don’t worry about smiling to the camera.
Where should we have our session?
I recommend having your session at home, in your neighborhood, or at a place that has special meaning to you, somewhere that's part of your routine. This ensures that your photos will hold even more sentimental value to you.
What should we do during our session?
Documentary photography is all about your real life, and finding beauty in the everyday. It's about what a day in your life looks like at this very moment, so stay true to that. Anything that you enjoy doing together as a family is the perfect activity, whether it be at home, or out on an adventure.
What should I wear?
Wear something you are comfortable in. If you’re not comfortable, it will show in the photos. Try to avoid anything overly tight that would restrict movement, and be sure to dress appropriately for the weather. Wear shoes you can walk comfortably in.
For family sessions, wear clothes that are complementary in style and color without being too “matchy.” Clothes should all be the same level of formality. Avoid logos or writing. Think about layering clothing if you want the look of a few different outfits.
If we're on location, leave your purse behind, unless you want it in the photos. Besides, you can be more free and fun without it! I can carry a few necessities for you in my camera bag.
When is the best time to schedule our newborn session?
I suggest having the session at around 2 weeks old, but I consider up to 6 weeks newborn. Bringing a new person into the family is always an adjustment, so after you feel comfortable and settled in at home is best. As for the time of day, I will work around baby’s schedule.
What if we need to reschedule?
I understand that life happens, but if you need to reschedule, I ask that you give at least 48 hours notice.
Can our pet be part of our photo session?
Of course! In fact, I encourage it. Your pet is part of your family, and is more than welcome.
Can we bring props to use during our session?
The documentary style does not often utilize traditional props. However, an exception would be something that you or your child would naturally have with you, such as bubbles for the playground, or a toy that your child takes everywhere with them. That would of course be welcome, and encouraged!
When will my photos be ready?
You can expect to view your images in 2-4 weeks.
Will our photos be edited?
Yes, all images presented in your gallery will be fully edited.
What is your editing style?
I prefer my images to be as realistic as possible, with rich colors and a bit of a matte, vintage tone. I also have a strong love of black and white, so you will see a lot of that in my work. I restrict my editing to technical aspects, such as color correction or sharpening. I do not do any editing to compromise the integrity of the original image, such as removing an object from the background, removing wrinkles, or slimming waistlines.
Do you offer digital files? If so will they be watermarked?
A set number of digital files will be included with your session. The images are print ready, therefore will not be watermarked. See my investment page for more information.
What is a reveal and ordering session?
If you choose to have a reveal and ordering session (which is 100% complimentary!) we will meet at your home (or another location if you so choose) a few weeks after your session. Together we'll go over your options for albums and wall art, and I will help you choose the products that best fit your needs.
Do you shoot weddings or parties?
Yes I do! I shoot small events, typically 50 people or less. I specialize in intimate affairs such as micro weddings, court house weddings, backyard weddings, and elopements. I accept other types of events on a limited basis. Please email me with your event requests.
What forms of payment do you accept?
I accept cash, check, or online payment through Venmo. Payment is due before your session.
